DBT Modules Explained - Distress Tolerance

The Distress Tolerance module starts this week for DBTBrisbane, here is a little more about what to expect from this module:

Distress Tolerance (8 Weeks)

Goal: Survive crisis moments without making the situation worse.

Distress Tolerance skills help you get through high-stress moments where emotions feel unmanageable. This module is especially useful for people who experience urges to self-harm, shut down, lash out, or dissociate when overwhelmed.

Key skills include:

●       TIPP: Fast-acting strategies to reduce physiological arousal

●       Self-soothing: Using the five senses to calm the nervous system

●       Distraction techniques (ACCEPTS): Shifting attention away from distress

●       IMPROVE the moment: Internal coping strategies to enhance emotional flexibility

●       Radical acceptance: Learning to accept reality without resistance, even when painful

Mindfulness skills are used each week to notice urges, slow reactivity, and create a pause between emotion and action.
